The Love That Dares – Barbara Vesey + Rachel Smith

£16.99

Gall llythyr cariad da siarad ar draws canrifoedd, a rhoi sicrwydd inni fod yr ofid a’r ecstasi y gallai rhywun deimlo yn yr 21ain ganrif wedi cael ei rannu gan gariadon sydd wedi hen fynd. Dyma yn fwy gwir byth am lythyrau caru LHDTC+: materion cariad a pherthnasoedd sydd, tan iawn yn ddiweddar, bu’n rhaid iddo oroesi o fewn amlenni wedi’u selio a thu ôl i ddrysau caeedig.

Yn The Love That Dares, mae cariad cwiar yn siarad ei enw trwy eiriau cariadon o flynyddoedd wedi mynd heibio. Ochr yn ochr â’r enwau enwocaf yn cydfodoli llythyrau wedi’u hysgrifennu’n hyfryd gan cariadon llai adnabyddus, gan roi cipolwg i ni ar gariad cwiar y tu allan i chwyddwydr enwogrwydd neu ffortiwn. Mae’r llythyrau hyn yn rhoi cip inni ar yr angerdd a’r dewrder a gymerodd parhau â pherthynas hoyw ar adegau pan oedd yn amhriodol ar y gorau, ac yn anghyfreithlon ar y gwaethaf. Mae cyflwyniadau goleuedig i bob set o lythyrau yn rhoi syniad o’r hanesyddol i ddarllenwyr cyd-destun yr ysgrifennwyd hwy ynddo.

A good love letter can speak across centuries, and reassure us that the agony and the ecstasy one might feel in the 21st century have been shared by lovers long gone. This is all the more true of LGBTQ+ love letters: love affairs and relationships that, until very recently, had to survive within sealed envelopes and behind closed doors. In The Love That Dares, queer love speaks its name through the words of lovers from years gone by. Alongside the more famous names coexist beautifully written letters by lesser-known lovers, giving us an insight into queer love outside of the spotlight of fame or fortune. These letters give us a glimpse into the passion and courage it took to continue a gay relationship in times when it was at best improper, and at worst illegal. Enlightening introductions to each set of letters give readers an idea of the historical context in which they were written.
