Ocean Vuong’s debut novel is, in itself, gorgeous. Semi-autobiographical, protagonist Little Dog’s comes out to his mother, a Vietnamese immigrant to America, in a series of letters. In doing so, the novels traces their family history back to the Vietnam War and follows it through to the opioid crisis in contemporary America.
