Named after the youngest member of a Glaswegian family, Shuggie Bain traces the stages of this character’s life and his kin as they attempt to forge a life in the Scottish city in the 1980s, as industrial decline and Thatcherite politics guts it.  The struggle to do so is exacerbated by the alcoholism of Agnes, Shuggie’s mother. The young ween, however, perseveres, determinate not to abandon her… unlike everyone else.

Steel yourself.  This Booker Prize Winner is bewitching and like its protagonist, you’ll cling to it, compelled, transfixed, even though it can be utterly agonising.
